About the game
Lisboa is a deeply thematic strategy game that transports players to the aftermath of the 1755 earthquake, tsunami, and fire that devastated the Portuguese capital. As members of the nobility, players must navigate the complex social and political landscape of the era to help the Marquis of Pombal reconstruct the city. The game is renowned for its intricate systems and beautiful artwork by Ian O'Toole.
Rather than just building structures, you are managing the delicate balance of influence between the King, the Marquis, and the architects. Every action contributes to the city's rebirth, from clearing rubble to opening new businesses in the downtown Baixa district. The ultimate goal is to accumulate the most wigs, the primary symbol of prestige and victory in this historical setting.
How to play
The core of the Lisboa rules revolves around a clever card-playing system. On your turn, you play one card from your hand either to your personal player board or to the Royal Palace. Playing a card to your board allows you to visit the nobles to gain favors and resources, while playing to the Palace lets you perform executive actions and interact with the city map directly.
As you progress, you will build stores in the streets of Lisbon, which requires managing the city's rubble and coordinating with architects. You must also manage your influence and money, as the cost of actions fluctuates based on the state of the Royal Treasury. The game concludes after a set number of rounds, leading to a final scoring where your sets of decrees and city contributions determine the winner.
Who it's for
This game is a perfect match for heavy strategy enthusiasts who enjoy complex, interconnected mechanics. If you appreciate games where every decision has a ripple effect on the board's economy and future opportunities, Lisboa offers a rewarding challenge. It is widely considered one of Vital Lacerda's most cohesive designs, blending historical accuracy with deep gameplay.
Because of its weight and the density of the Lisboa rulebook, it is best suited for experienced gamers who have a few hours to dedicate to a single session. It also features a robust solo mode for those who prefer to tackle the reconstruction of Lisbon against an automated opponent.
